Marketing Tips For Small Businesses – Part 1

When I look at businesses that struggle I notice a lot of them seem to have two things in common, they don’t know how to market their business and they don’t value the power of marketing. Let’s think about this for a second. The best known brands in the world such as Apple, Coke, EBay all have something in common..They market and market and market. They don’t do this because they like spending money, they do this because they KNOW it will make the money.

Now obviously as a small business this isn’t comparable but the point is still valid. Every business has the same problem in that they lack enough customers to make the business sustainable and eventually profitable whether this is locally, nationally or internationally is irrelevant.

Offline Marketing tools at your disposal:

Firstly let’s look at the main offline marketing methods at your disposal:

  • SMS Marketing (text message marketing)
  • Flyer dropping
  • Newspaper advertising
  • Poster advertising
  • Sticker advertising
  • Menu Advertising
  • Cold calling
  • Cold walking

How many of these can you honestly say you use regularly? Not many I bet! There are so many opportunities using these offline methods that business owners forget to use.

SMS Marketing:

Are you collecting your customer’s details including their mobile phone numbers? Use a free giveaway competition to collect as many details as you can so you can make a local marketing list. When you have slow days then you can hit that list with an offer to get things going. This is a very inexpensive way to market your business and best of all your marketing to your own customers, people who have given you their details…they want to be sold your products/services!

Flyer Dropping:

Old school but still an effective marketing method. Just be careful in how you are doing it. Make sure your flyer has something on it to get their attention and then something on it that is worth keeping (like a coupon).

Newspaper Advertising:

Another Old school method but can still be effective. Everyone knows about this method so not going to go into this.

Poster Advertising:

Another easy to do method but still mainly business owners don’t do it. Get posters printer (it’s not going to break the bank) and stick them on notice boards and ask other business owners to put them up for you.
